Dec 17 to Dec 19 BE 212 and Hopeful

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The job of keeping our children safe is something we all do together.
We bear accountability for every child.  They are all our children.
It’s our first job – caring for our children. And that is how we will be measured as a nation.
President Obama, Memorial in Newtown, CT
Instructional Framework 101:  IF 101
Domain 3: Instruction - the heart of the framework
Component e: Demonstrating Flexibility and Responsiveness
Element: Response to students
Application: How do you balance the needs of the lesson with the spontaneous teachable moments?  How do you develop a deep knowledge of your students so that you can be flexible and responsive to each child?  How will you respond to the needs of your students in light of Friday’s tragedy?  The business of our business is learning, but this week, let learning be around inclusion, building community, assuring safety, and predictable environments.
Danielson Quote:   She would tell you to love the children unconditionally!
Monday Morning Gathering
In preparation for the initial minutes with students on Monday, please gather in the gym at 8:20am to draw strength from each other and become aware of a common message.  We will continue with the planned Lock Down Safety Drill. Friday was hard, but Monday may be harder.
Staff Meeting – Dec 18 @ 7:45am
Agenda: Post Cards to 5 students; AR Update; Science Fair; Who’s the Hero – Anti-Bullying
Cinnamon Rolls, Cutie Oranges, and Coffee will be served at 7:30am
Furlough – Dec 19
NEWS UPDATE!  Our start time with students is a regular Mon, Tue, Thur, Fri start time – 8:50am with the tardy bell at 8:55am.  This matters because buses will pick up students ‘late’ compared to other Wednesdays.  We’ll communicate via School Messenger, but please inform your students, too.
Most of you know what time to leave to honor the furlough expectations.  Office staff will be leaving as soon as students are home and accounted for.  Thank you for all you do!
IXL – Are you monitoring its use? How’s it going?  What do you love?  How can this resource be used to inform instruction?
BE 212:  Every Monday Matters
Every Monday does matter, and this is no ordinary Monday. The thought that we get to return to our school, to our students, to our colleagues, and to our community is a gift.  Let us BE grateful for relationships; let us BE vigilant in our watch over kids and each other; and let us BE hopeful that something good will come from tragedy.  Please make plans to meet in the gym at 8:20 on Monday morning to draw strength from each other before greeting the children.
Dec 3 to Dec 7 BE 212 Disciplined
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Many of life's circumstances are created by three basic choices:
the disciplines you choose to keep;
the people you choose to be with;
and the laws you choose to obey.

Charles Millhuff, Evangelist

Instructional Framework 101: IF 101

Domain 3: Instruction - the heart of the framework
Component d: Using Assessment in Instruction
Element: Monitoring of Student Learning

Application: How are you systematically monitoring everything that goes on in your classroom? How are you monitoring groups of students and individuals before, during, and after instruction?

Danielson Quote: They (teachers) monitor everything going on in the class: student engagement in the activities, the appropriateness of the materials and groupings, and the extent to which students are actually learning what the teacher intended. (from Enhancing Professional Practice, p.86)

Super job, Highlanders! The task always seems daunting at first, but reading how our students are doing and knowing how much YOU are doing to support learning is INSPIRING! Thank you for having your reports done on-time (and especially early!), and for welcoming our feedback with such professionalism!

IXL - Class Set Up Due Dec 3
Please let Lisa or Rebecca know if you need help setting up your roster. Please use the letter to communicate with families by the end of this week about this resource.

United Way Campaign – Talk About 212!
All together, Hunt staff donated $760 through United Way. Thank you for your generosity!

WERA Conference
Lisa and Rebecca will be attending the Washington Educational Research Association conference on Thursday and Friday. We will have an opportunity to hear Dr. Charlotte Danielson, and learn the latest information about the Smarter Balanced Assessments that will begin in two years and connect to the Common Core. While we are out of the building Lorraine Hirakawa will be providing administrative coverage. She is currently an administrative intern at Emerald Ridge High School. No doubt she’ll have a GREAT couple of days with YOU and our students!

A Dozen A Day! Celebrating 12-12-12
Let’s make this a date Highlanders will remember! It won’t happen again until the next century! You all have the BEST ideas for how to make unique events fun by wrapping instruction around it! Share your ideas….here’s a start from some of your colleagues:

Math: problem solving with 12; factors of 12; addends to 12;
Reading: there must be stories with 12?
Writing: List things that come in 12s; Where does ‘Imperial Measurement’ come from?
Real World: Baker’s dozen; ‘12th Man’;

Anyone know anyone who might donate a dozen of something to each classroom for dividing up and sharing?

Choice: the platform for self-discipline. Know that every day you are helping students improve their circumstances because of how you:

• are disciplined in your work;
• choose to BE with kids all day;
• you model good citizenship.

Someone looks forward to seeing you every day – thank you for making it worth their while!

Domain 3: Instruction - the heart of the framework
Component c: Engaging Students in Learning
Element: Grouping of students

Application: How are you using grouping scenarios? How are students invited to take initiative in the formation or adjustment of instructional groups? Are instructional groupings productive and appropriate to the learning goals?

Danielson Quote: In grouping students…most important, the type of instructional group should reflect what a teacher is trying to accomplish and should serve that purpose (from Enhancing Professional Practice, p.84).

BE 212: Every Monday Matters
♫It’s the most wonderful time of the year….♫

For some of our families, this song line rings true. For MANY of our families, it’s a reminder of what they don’t have, and even worse, what they can’t have. As we move into the ‘Season,’ the GREATEST gift we can give our students right now is a predictable and meaningful school day – keep the routine, routine. In the words of AVID – keep the 5 Ps in mind: Proper Planning Prevents Poor Performance.

Danielson Quote: …class discussions are animated, engaging all students in important questions and using the discussion format as a technique to extend knowledge. (from Enhancing Professional Practice, p.81)

    BE 212: Every Monday Matters
    Happy is a state of mind, right? It’s a decision each of us made when we started this profession. Making the most of what we have in the classroom is a challenge and a blessing. We know the best we have are the faces looking back at you during the school day. What do you think they see? What do you think they believe about YOU! What do you believe about EACH of them? Are you capturing the BEST of each child every day?
