You know what Anita Archer would say? "Tell 'em what you're gonna teach 'em. Teach 'em. And then tell 'em what you taught 'em." Along with posting your weekly learning targets, talk about them. The kids will listen - I promise! And more importantly, they will learn!
"That Was Easy"
Is this what we'll say next year as we look over our school and classroom data to assess how our instructional choices made a difference? I hope so! In honor of the 2008 School of Distinction Award and in honor of the work ahead of us, Staples has provided "Easy" buttons for every staff member. If you weren't able to make it to our cake celebration on Friday to pick up your Easy Button, see Rebecca. I challenge you to discover ways to make learning and teaching "Easy." When you find something that works, press your Easy Button and then share your Easy Find with a colleague.
AYP + SpEd = All OUR Kids
As Bob Silverman shared at our last staff meeting, of the cells we qualified for, we missed the Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) mark with our Special Education Students on the 07-08 Reading WASL. Remember, this category includes all students who are served on an IEP - whether it's pull-out or inclusion resource, speech, OT/PT, etc. Let's not despair, though. We know what to do - and we'll do it - EASY as 1-2-3:
- Provide excellent classroom instruction using strategies that engage every student
- Identify the students who need more time and prescriptive support
- Monitor progress through diagnostic and prescriptive measures
I think we all left the staff meeting feeling the pressure to do more...however, when we all do our part to accomplish the EASY 1-2-3s, every student including our Special Education population will show what they know on any assessment. Just as important, ALL of our students will be well prepared for the next learning tasks and eventually the Real World.
United Way Campaign
There's still time to help Hunt reach its goal. By reaching our goal, we help PSD reach its goal for Pierce County. Every little bit helps; whether you contribute or not, please return your pledge form to Susan ASAP.
Hunt Food Drive
Mike has begun planning for our annual food drive. We will be collecting food from Nov 10 to Nov 21 for needy families in Pierce County - some will likely be in our own school neighborhood. Whatever you can do to help promote and encourage the spirit of giving is greatly appreciated. Watch for more details.
SLPs and Parent Conferences
Be sure to share the Student Learning Plans you've written with parents at Parent/Teacher Conferences. In addition, be sure to update the SLP online with the parent and student goals. Each child's SLP is meant to help keep everyone on the same page and is a document which will need periodic updating and revising throughout the year.
